Boiler Shortages Update: New Supply Warning

Boiler Shortages Update: New Supply Warnings Issued

Back in September we reported that the same supply chain and haulier shortage issues that led to the recent fuel shortages are also impacting boiler manufacturers, in our article asking whether boiler shortages are on the horizon.

Since then, our sources in the boiler industry and at national wholesalers have continued to relay to us that the majority of major, quality boiler manufacturers are now experiencing supply chain issues, leaving those still able to produce struggling to cover the shortfall, and forcing prices ever higher.

Boiler Shortages Leading to Empty Shelves

Supply Chain Issues Affecting Major Boiler Manufacturers

In January, H&V News Magazine (the leading resource for the latest news and insights in the heating, ventilating and air conditioning industry) issued an update on the boiler supply chain issues they first reported in late 2021. They reported that, “a shortage of semi-conductors used in boilers”, are continuing to significantly impact on the industry (https://www.hvnplus.co.uk/uncategorised/heating-sector-faces-perfect-storm-of-supply-chain-issues-26-08-2021/).

The Construction Leadership Council (whose mission is to provide sector leadership in the construction industry) report that the heating industry may be hit particularly hard by the shortage of semi-conductors, as “due to the size of their orders, there is a natural bias in the system towards automotive and electronics firms, which may cause issues for manufacturers of boilers” (https://www.constructionleadershipcouncil.co.uk/news/construction-product-availability-statement-10/).

Here’s what we know so far:

Baxi Boiler Shortage

Our wholesalers are reporting shortages of Baxi boilers, with the company’s other brands Main and Potterton also affected.

Vaillant Boiler Shortage

Our industry sources tell us that Vaillant appear to be experiencing shortages, with Vaillant boilers becoming increasingly difficult to source.

Worcester Bosch Boiler Shortage

A Worcester Bosch product supply update dated 7th February 2022 confirms that the company are still being affected by supply shortages.

The update states that, “the situation is similar to last month”, and states that Worcester Bosch are, “still being affected by the electrical component shortage in most of our gas boiler ranges”, leaving them with a “backlog of orders”.

The manufacturer also confirms that production and delivery continues with most ranges, including the Greenstar 8000 Life, Greenstar 8000 Style and Greenstar 4000, with only the Greenstar 2000 being paused. However, suppliers are finding that Worcester Bosch boilers are becoming increasingly difficult to source.

Ideal Boiler Shortage

To our knowledge, Ideal boilers are currently the only major, quality boiler manufacturer with no component supply issues and in full production.

However, pressure is now increasing on Ideal to make up the shortfall caused by shortages at other manufacturers. Even before the current boiler shortage issue developed, Ideal appeared to overtake Worcester Bosch to become the leading UK boiler supplier for the first time. Now industry sources are concerned that Ideal may begin to see an impact on supply as they find they cannot manufacturer fast enough to keep pace with the demand created, while also protecting their own supply chain.

What boilers are currently available?

Smart Plumbing currently have the full range of Ideal boilers in stock and available for installation.

Boilers from other manufacturers are currently subject to wait times ranging from a few days, to a few months.
