What is a Combi Boiler?

You could save £340 a year by replacing a G-rated boiler with an A-rated boiler and full set of heating controls What is a Combi Boiler?

Combi boiler usage can account for over half of a household’s annual energy bill spend, so with fuel bills on the rise, having an efficient boiler is essential.

Combi, or combination, boilers are the most efficient type of boiler, providing both heating and hot water from one unit. This means that combi boilers are the most popular choice for new boiler installations, and can now be found in the majority of UK homes.

Read on to find out more about combi boilers, and discover whether a combi boiler would be a good choice for your home.

Do I have a Combi Boiler?

It is usually easy to tell whether you have a combi boiler by simply taking a look at it:

One Unit

A combi boiler is a single unit with no separate water tank or cylinder, and no external pump.

Five Copper Pipes

Combi boilers usually have 5 copper pipes extending out from the bottom.

Why are Combi Boilers so Popular?

Efficiency

Modern combi boilers can be up to 98% efficient, making them the most efficient type of boiler.

Size

A combi boiler is one compact unit with no additional tanks or cylinders required. This makes them ideal for homes where space is limited; some models can are even small enough to be installed in a standard kitchen cupboard.

Hot Water on Demand

Combi boilers produce hot water on-demand, which means there is no need to wait for stored hot water in a separate tank to warm up. This also means that no energy is wasted heating up water that is not used; adding to the efficiency of combi boilers.

Flexible Installation Location

Combi boilers only consist of one single, relatively small, unit. No storage tank is required in an airing cupboard or loft, giving more options as to where a combi boiler can be installed.

Is a Combi Boiler Suitable for my Home?

Combi boilers rely on good water pressure from the mains to provide adequate flow rate. If your water pressure is high, a combi boiler is likely to be suitable for your home; if your mains pressure is relatively low then a combi boiler may not be appropriate.

Combi boilers are suitable for most homes with one bathroom. However, the water flow rate from a combi boiler is reduced when two or more outlets are in use at the same time, so if your home has more than one bathroom then a system boiler with a cylinder to store hot water may be a better choice.

What Size Combi Boiler do I Need?

Combi boiler power output is measured in kilowatts (kW). The higher the boiler’s kW is, the higher the hot water and heating demand it can meet.

As a rough guide:

Combi boilers around 25kW are most suitable for homes with 1-2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom
Combi boilers around 30kW are most suitable for homes with 2-3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom
Combi boilers around 35kW are most suitable for homes with 3-4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms
Combi boilers around 40kW and over are most suitable for homes with 4+ bedrooms and 2+ bathrooms

Are all Combi Boilers the Same?

All modern combi boilers are condensing boilers, which means that they collect the gases that are produced by burning gas and use them to heat water as it enters the system. This increases boiler efficiency, and in the process saves you money on your energy bills and reduces your carbon emissions.

Key factors to consider when comparing combi boilers include how long the warranty is, their hot water flow rate and price. You can find all this information and more for our full combi boiler range.
